500 Tiles
An Inspiring Collection of International Work

Suzanne J.E. Tourtillott, Editor

The five hundred handmade clay tiles in this juried collection are a canvas for decorative embellishment for artists from around the world. Several of the pieces are outstanding for their surface treatments, such as atmospheric firing, rather than for their form. Others illustrate how clay offers a richer and more durable surface to draw and paint on than either paper or canvas.

The translucency and color intensity of glazes, for example, and the ability to sgraffito through wetware slip add depth that can never be attained with conventional drawing methods. Some of the entries could be considered sculptures while others present an artist's narrative, from political commentary to whimsy and humor.
